As the plane banked for a final approach to Incirlik, Levi pressed his thumb against the Eye of Providence and heard the lock on the briefcase engage.

Within seconds he detected the faint smell of something burning, and even though the briefcase immediately felt warm to the touch, it never got uncomfortably hot.

The plane landed with a thud, and the engines roared as Levi lurched forward due to the heavy application of brakes and thrust reversers.

Levi unbuckled his seatbelt as the plane coasted to a stop near a set of hangars emblazoned with the US Air Force logo. He stood, hefted the backpack he’d retrieved from the crate in the back, and the diplomat motioned for him as the stairs unfurled from the body of the aircraft.

“I’ll walk you to your connection, Lieutenant.”

Levi followed the diplomat off the plane and noticed a Mercedes limousine waiting nearby with a small American flag sticking up from the front right quarter panel of the limo, and the red crescent and star flag of Turkey waved from the limo’s front left quarter panel.

The diplomat waved at the Airman standing by the car and yelled over the sounds of the nearby taxiing jets, “I’ll be right back.” Frank motioned for Levi to continue following as he walked toward the hangar.

Levi caught up to the man and asked, “Where are we going?”

“Where are you going is the better question. I’m not briefed on the details of your mission, just that I’m to help you get to the office.”

In the tight hallway, lit by hanging LED lamps, there were signs that had a logo with three yellow triangles, labeled “Fallout Shelter” painted all along the network of concrete halls. The diplomat paused and pointed down a dimly-lit hallway that seemed to lead to a dead end. “The entrance is that way. It’s biometrically keyed, so you should be fine. Any questions before I go back up top-side?”

Levi frowned, “Um, isn’t someone going to wonder where I am, why I didn’t go back up with you?”

The diplomat shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. The crew from the plane that brought us has likely already departed for its hangar, and nobody was expecting you at the embassy anyway.”

Levi shook hands with the diplomat and walked toward the end of the hallway.

Posted near the ceiling was an old painted logo of the Eye of Providence, and on the concrete wall was a plain metal panel with no obvious markings or any indication this was an entrance of any kind.

It looked like a dead end.

Levi glanced over his shoulder, saw nobody, and pressed his splayed hand against the metal plate.

The plate was warm to the touch and almost immediately he heard a click. The wall in front of him lowered into the ground, revealing a dark corridor.

He stepped across the
